GEO · GENERATIVE ENGINE OPTIMIZATION

GEO agency for brands that want to be cited in AI answers

GEO turns your brand into a source that generative search systems use to build their answers. That keeps you in the answer itself, above the list of links.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing content and source signals for generative search systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Classic SEO aims for ranking positions. GEO aims for being retrieved and trusted by AI systems and cited in the answer they generate.

WHO IT IS FOR

Who this page is for

GEO matters when more and more buying decisions are prepared in AI answers:

  • B2B brands in categories that need explaining
  • Companies whose buyers research comparisons and recommendations with AI tools
  • Brands that should show up in 'best providers for …' prompts
  • Agencies and expert brands that want to be cited as an authority
  • Companies that rank well on Google but are missing from AI answers
  • Teams that want to know which sources AI systems use in their category today

GEO is less urgent if your customers come almost entirely through referrals or tenders. In that case we first check whether the effort pays off for you.

THE PROBLEM

One question turns into thirty searches.

Generative systems break a prompt into a fan of sub-queries: comparisons, alternatives, prices, reviews. Each path is answered from its own sources, and the results are combined into one answer.

A brand can dominate the visible search query and still be completely missing from the fan-out that actually feeds the answer. GEO works on exactly that fan-out.

Say someone asks ChatGPT for a suitable provider in their industry. In the background, the system searches for comparisons, prices, reviews and alternatives. In the end, only a few names make it into the answer.

Whether your brand is among them depends on more than your website. What trade media, comparison sites and directories say about you also counts. That is why GEO looks at both your own pages and the sources around you.

The tricky part is that you don't notice the gap. No analytics tool reports an answer you are missing from. That is why GEO at SEESZN starts with a measurement, before any new content is written.

WHAT SEESZN DOES

What GEO work looks like in practice:

Query fan-out mapping
We map the hidden search paths in your category before any content is written. To do this, we build a fixed prompt set from real buying questions. That way it is clear which questions matter before anyone starts writing.
Citation surfaces
We build pages that work as a quotable source: dense, structured and self-contained. Each passage fully answers one question. It still works when a system reads only that one paragraph.
Entity-rich content
Content that makes clear who you are, what you do and how that can be verified. This includes your services, fields of application, figures and the people who stand behind your expertise.
Source gap analysis
We find the surfaces that models already trust and close the gap. These can be trade media, directories, comparison sites or communities. We check where you are missing and where a listing or article is realistic.
Structured data
Schema works like grammar. Markup follows the evidence, never the other way around. It describes what is on the page. It does not replace content and does not guarantee a mention.
Technical accessibility
We check whether search crawlers and AI crawlers can reach your most important pages. Content that sits only in images, PDFs or scripts gets moved into readable text.

THE PROCESS

How we work

Five steps, always in this order. Each step ends with a concrete result that you receive.

  1. 01

    Map the fan-out

We find the sub-queries that feed the answers in your category. We collect the questions your customers ask before they buy. From these we build a prompt set that we test in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

Result: your prompt set and a baseline measurement

  2. 02

    Find source gaps

We look at which surfaces get cited and where you are missing. We analyze which brands and sources appear in the answers and compare that with your website and your profiles.

Result: a list of gaps, sorted by effort and importance for your business

  3. 03

    Build source surfaces

We write in chunks: one claim per passage, quotable without the rest of the page. We revise existing pages and build new ones where an answer is missing. Definitions, comparisons, prices and processes are written so each one makes sense on its own.

Result: revised and new pages, live on your website

  4. 04

    Strengthen the entity

Consistent naming and corroboration across all relevant profiles. Your name, services and facts should read the same everywhere: on your website, in profiles, in directories and in trade media. Where suitable third-party sources are missing, we build them with you.

Result: a consistent picture of your brand across all important sources

  5. 05

    Monitor

We check whether and where you show up in answers, and adjust. We run the same prompt set again at fixed intervals. AI answers fluctuate, so the trend matters more than any single measurement.

Result: a report with mentions, citations and next steps

    Frequency: monthly

CASES

What GEO work means in numbers

Two projects, two roles. The first shows GEO and AIO in AI answers. The second shows the SEO foundation that GEO builds on.

School-trip provider: from an average position of 5.3 to 2.2 in AI Search

Starting point
An established provider in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) was visible on Google but rarely in the top positions. In AI answers, the brand was not yet clearly set up as a source.
What we did
We cleaned up the technical setup, sharpened search intent and strengthened internal linking. We also added quotable answer blocks and relevant third-party sources.
Result
In the prompt set we tracked throughout, the brand's average position improved from 5.3 to 2.2 within 45 days.

French Beret: 752,000 impressions and 3,590 clicks in 3 months

Context
This is an SEO and e-commerce case. It is not a GEO case. It shows the foundation AI systems need before they have much to retrieve.
What we did
We built the shop structure, collections, products and editorial content from scratch as one system. 245 products are live.
Result
752,000 Google impressions and 3,590 organic clicks in 3 months. The average position across all search queries was 7.1.

SEO AND GEO

SEO and GEO: two questions, one system

GEO doesn't replace SEO. Pages that search engines can't read properly also do poorly in AI answers. That is why we work on both in one system.

COST

What a GEO agency costs

A reliable figure is only possible once we have looked at your starting point. The effort depends mainly on three things:

  • Size of the prompt set: how many offers, markets and languages it covers
  • State of the website: whether the technical setup and content already hold up or still need to be built
  • Source landscape: how many third-party sources are missing and how much work they take to build

CHOOSING

How to choose a GEO agency

An agency's way of working tells you whether it fits. These six questions help you compare:

  • Does it measure first? A fixed prompt set and a baseline measurement belong at the start.
  • Does it disclose how it measures? Systems, questions, language and time period should be stated in the report.
  • Does it show real cases? With source, time period and measurement method. A row of logos is not enough.
  • Does it understand SEO? Without a technical foundation, GEO has little to build on.
  • Does it promise mentions? Nobody controls what an AI system answers. Guarantees are a warning sign.
  • How are third-party sources created? A good agency explains where mentions come from and how they are checked.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does GEO mean?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It means optimizing to be retrieved and cited as a source by generative AI search systems, in addition to ranking in classic result lists.
What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO optimizes for ranking positions in search engines. GEO optimizes for being cited in generated answers. SEO asks whether you are ranked. GEO asks whether you are used as a source. SEO remains the foundation, because only pages that machines can read well can be retrieved. GEO builds on it and also works on passages, entity and third-party sources.
Which GEO agency is the best in Germany?
That depends on your industry, your market and your starting point. There is no neutral ranking of all GEO agencies. Agencies that put themselves in first place are not an independent source. Check whether an agency measures first, discloses its method and shows cases with sources. Serious providers don't promise mentions in AI answers.
How do AI systems choose which sources to cite?
Put simply, they prefer content that is structured, quotable on its own and backed by consistent signals. A definition that stands on its own or a comparison that needs no extra context is more likely to be picked than long, undifferentiated prose.
Can GEO be measured?
Partly. You can check whether and how a brand appears in the answers to relevant prompt sets and which sources get cited. The details vary by industry, language, search system and prompt set.
How much does a GEO agency cost?
That depends on the size of the prompt set, the state of your website and the source landscape. At SEESZN, work usually starts with an audit. The audit and ongoing support are priced on request.
How long does it take for GEO to work?
There is no general answer. Some systems use live search, others rely on older training data. In the school-trip case, we measured the change over 45 days. That is one example and should not be read as a benchmark.
Can a GEO agency guarantee that ChatGPT will mention my brand?
No. AI answers are not deterministic and change with model versions. An agency can improve the conditions and measure what happens. Nobody can honestly give a guarantee.
Do I need GEO if my SEO is already working well?
Good SEO is the best starting point. It doesn't automatically cover AI answers, though. An audit shows whether your brand appears in the answers for your category or is missing.
